Review of The Twelfth IAPS Convention next June in historic Old Town Albuquerque, NM.
THE BIGGEST PASTEL PARTY ON THE PLANET
TUESDAY, June 6 through SUNDAY, June 11, 2017
You must have proof of membership to join convention, which could be obtained through Michele Wells Below are some tips/feedback from Michele and Vic

Getting There: Michele flew at cost of $320.00                                                                                                                                             Vic and Rocky drove- it was a two day drive from STL but they had a transportation to get
around. Vic did say it was just expensive to get RV camp spot as it was to stay at Motel 6.
Where to Stay: The convention hotel was approx. $123.00 per night, convenient but could get expensive, Motel 6 was a couple miles away but more affordable @ $43.00 per night.
For 2019 possibly groups could bunk and reduce costs. Lisa Crisman said that Best Western down the street had a shuttle offered but the hotel was booked up in November of the year before. Taxi from Best Western was $35.00    Registration for 2019 convention will open up in October /November 2018 ___________________________________________________________________________________

NON ARTIST SPOUSE/COMPANION FEE: $75.00 if you wish to bring a non-artist companion or spouse to the convention, you will need to sign them up as part of your own (artist) registration. After entering your own personal information on the registration form,
Fee gets you in and they offer a continental breakfast from 7 to 9 am – must get there early because food ran out.
Food was expensive but every day the bar had happy hour food. ___________________________________________________________________________________

1 day workshops – average costs $200.00

2 hour Demonstrations – cost between $65.00 and $75.00 – important tip; read the subject line. The instructors are to give 5 descriptive titles. The one the convention selects for them may not be what you envision your favorite artists to present. Most demos had large screen TVs that allowed attendees to see close up what the artist was doing. However, most times they just painted and did not share too many tips for the most part.  Group sizes for demos were about 60 – 70 people.
For 2019, if we can get a group together, between us maybe we can all attend something different and take photos and notes to share with the group.

Other Tips:  There was a Central Bulletin Board where you can post and join different plein air jaunts, buy and sell classes, demos and banquet tickets during the convention.
Michele took train to Santa Fe with several others – 1.45 hr. ride one way- $9.00 -
To get taxi from convention hotel to train depot was $18.00   Santa Fe was a great place to paint
Lots of walking, bring comfortable shoes.  Or if you can’t walk, you need a car or share cab with others

The most important is to get your reservations for accommodations, even leaving workshops and demos to last minute if need be, there were demo openings available the day of arrival still.

Michele took 1 day workshop from Kim Lordier – Michele commented she got more out of this one day workshop than any of the demos and felt was worth the money.

Again – read the description to understand what will be covered to make sure it fits with your wants.

VENDORS: Each vendor had sponsored artist(s) to represent their product, many where demoing right on site and you could stand next to them to watch. Free of charge.

There were companies selling paper, pastels, plein air easels, boxes etc. Also all the new products and prototypes where on display. Plenty of places to spend your money!

President Forum: The IAPS Convention gives IAPS Member Societies an important opportunity to meet face-to-face and share information with their counterparts in other societies. The 2017 Forum was guided by Liz Haywood-Sullivan, IAPS President; Richard McKinley, IAPS First Vice President; and Jimmy Wright, PSA President. Discussion on topics relating to managing thriving pastel societies, with a focus on addressing the needs, questions, and experiences of our member society executives.
Even though members cannot attend Michele Wells and Vic Mastis represented GPA.

For 2019 - GPA members should submit a list of questions, needs or suggestions that they can present during this Forum.

THE PASTELWORLD EXHIBITIONS
  • THE FOURTH MASTER CIRCLE EXHIBITION
  • 30TH IAPS JURIED EXHIBITION
  • DEMONSTRATORS EXHIBITION
These are available for viewing during hours of the convention – Michele said she went through on several different occasions and was able to view up close.

Michele and Vic brought back many goodies and literature for all in attendance. After Michele explained some of the new products, we drew names out of a hat.  Everyone went home with a nice sample of products.  Thank you to all the companies who gave us pastels, paper, new fangled sketchbooks, drawing material and literature to share with the members. There were 22 people in attendance!
Please support these helpful businesses!
